Until 1800, Kentucky elected its governors through electors who were chosen via popular vote from the same districts as the Kentucky House of Representatives.[2]
General election
On election day, May 27, 1795, Democratic-Republican nominee James Garrard won the election after being chosen by an electoral college vote on the second ballot, thereby retaining Democratic-Republican control over the office of Governor. Garrard was sworn in as the 2nd Governor of Kentucky on June 7, 1796.[3]
