Galway entered the championship as defending champions, however, they were beaten by Down in the All-Ireland semi-final.[2]
The All-Ireland final was played on 23 October 1966 at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick, between London and Cork, in what was their second ever meeting in the final. London won the match by 1–06 to 0–08 to claim their second championship title overall and a first tile in 28 years.[3][4]
