History
An ancient Greek family, the Filardi settled on the island of Rhodes in the 15th century. After Rhodes was besieged by the Turks, they sought refuge in Altamura (Bari), where the family was recognized as part of the nobility. A prominent branch later moved to Bologna and was entered into the Golden Book. The family also held several feudal possessions in Castelluccio (Potenza).[8]
In 1573, members of the Filardi family donated part of their land to a monastic order, on which the church and monastery of San Francesco were built. Over time, the family produced numerous individuals who gained distinction in public service, the liberal and ecclesiastical professions, and the military. Monsignor Ennio Filardi was appointed Bishop of Ascoli by Pope Paul III in 1536 and died in 1565. Monsignor Mario Filardi was appointed Archbishop of Avignon (France) by Pope Urban VIII in 1624. Monsignor Massenzio Filardi was appointed Bishop of Martirano (Catanzaro) by Pope Innocent X in 1650. Antonio, an infantry officer, took part in the wars under Emperor Napoleon I from 1810 to 1814.[8][9]
