Mathius Derek Fakhiri (born 6 January 1968) is a retired high-ranking officer of the Indonesian National Police and Indonesian politician. He has been the governor of Papua since 8 October 2025 for the 2025–2030 term. Previously, he was the chief of Papua Regional Police for the 2021–2024 period.

Early and personal life

Mathius was born in Ransiki, the capital of South Manokwari Regency, from the couple Nathalis Yame Fakhiri who comes from Bade in Mappi Regency, of the Awyu people and her mother Martha Kabuare, of the Inanwatan people.[2] He is the third child of ten siblings.[3]

As a toddler, he experienced cough and seizures to the point of near-death which resulted in difficulty speaking. Lutter, Mathius Fakhiri's younger brother, often helps so that his condition slowly returns to normal. The Free Papua Organization (OPM) rebellion in 1967–1968 caused his family to flee to his grandfather's house in Manokwari. After that, his family often moved to follow his father's assignment location, who was a Police Sector in Ransiki, then Boven Digoel Regency in the 1970s, and finally Kepi in Mappi Regency.[3]

He began his elementary education at YPK Merauke Elementary School in 1981. While in Jayapura, he continued his education at YPPK Teruna Mulia Middle School in Argapura. Six months later, his father was transferred to Wamena, allowing him to continue his education at YPPK St. Thomas Wamena Middle School. After graduating, he continued his education at State Senior High School 2 Jayapura. Apart from that, the extracurricular activities he is involved in are athletics, running, and has won championships at school and national levels, until he and the Papuan contingent won the first President's Cup for Papua. After graduating, he continued his education at the Police Academy [id] until graduating in 1990.[3]

He married Rafatul Mulkiyah, later known as Eva Mathius Fakhiri, and had 4 children from his marriage.[2] Due to his marriage, it is known that he eventually embraced Islam.[4] Mathius was assigned to Jayapura, Kaimana, Jakarta, and served as deputy chief of the West Papua and Papua Regional Police in 2020. He has been the chief of the Papua Regional Police since February 18, 2021.[3]
