Toffo [tɔ.fo] is a town and commune in the Atlantique Department of southern Benin. The commune covers an area of 515 square kilometres and as of 2002 had a population of 74,717 people.[1]
Geography
Toffo lies in the northwestern part of the Atlantique Department. [2] It is bounded to the south by the commune of Allada, to the east by the commune of Zè, and to the west by the Couffo river and the commune of Lalo. [3] The terrain includes low‐lying plains with soils favourable for agriculture, and several small watercourses draining into the Couffo and other local basins. [4]
Climate
The climate is sub-equatorial with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons. Annual rainfall averages between 900 and 1 100 mm. [5]
Administration
The commune of Toffo is one of eight communes in the Atlantique Department. [6] According to recent municipal documents, it comprises ten arrondissements and 76 villages/quarters of town. [7]
Demographics
In the 2013 census the population was recorded as approximately 101 585. [8] Ethnic groups present include primarily Fon, Adja, Aïzo and Holli. [9]
Economy
Toffo’s economy is heavily influenced by agriculture (notably maize, cassava, tomato, pepper) and the presence of small‐scale quarry and mining operations in some arrondissements. [10] The commune has also participated in urban infrastructure and sports facility development programs such as the “Le Bénin Révélé” initiative. [11]
Culture
Traditional monarchy and local chieftaincy structures are present in Toffo, reflecting southern Benin customary governance. [12]
