History

Mutiara Selatan (1972–2018)

Mutiara Selatan first operated on 17 August 1972, serving the Bandung–Surabaya route, offering 2 service classes: executive and business. In October 1999, the train served only business class. From 2014 to 2016, the Mutiara Selatan business class trains were used to operate the Sarangan Express train.

On 28 September 2016, following the birthday of PT KAI, KAI changed its service from business class to economy plus. The economy plus trains used at the time were made by the PT INKA in 2016 before the change to the original class—there were issues with passenger comfort, namely the narrow distance between seats.[1] and the route was extended to Malang starting 3 October 2016.

Mutiara Selatan train return to executive class service since 13 March 2017,[2] then operating using a series of stainless steel trains made by INKA since 1 April 2019 with executive and premium economy class services.[3]

Mutiara Selatan (2019–present)

With the release of the latest new train travel chart 2019 by the Directorate General of Railways and KAI as of 1 December 2019, Mutiara Selatan route was extended to Gambir with the Argo Wilis, Malabar, and Turangga train, also with a travel time of around 20 hours and 20 minutes from the origin of the route.[4] However, Mutiara Selatan returned to the original route from Bandung as before on the First of September 2020 because the passenger occupancy rate on the Bandung–Jakarta and Surabaya–Malang routes decreased due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[5]

On 1 February 2025, following of the latest new train travel chart 2025, this train which the night schedule will exchange trains at the Bandung Depot, with the Harina Morning train which has a connecting between Bandung and Surabaya Pasarturi via the northern route of Java.

Accident & Incident

  • On 19 January 1974, Mutiara Selatan B5 train crashed into the rear of the S3 train Bima I at Soka Station, Kebumen. The incident began with the S3 train stopping at Soka station because its pulling locomotive was used to help the 430 train which had broken down on the highway. The PPKA of Soka Station at that time let the signal enter the safe position after serving the S3 train, so the B5 train continued to run until it crashed into the rear of the S3 train which had stopped at the station yard. This accident caused one passenger to suffer serious injuries and 33 others and 2 PJKA employees to suffer minor injuries.[7]
  • On Thursday 5 May 1995 at around 03.47 local time, Mutiara Selatan 52 train with CC201 06 locomotive derailed and overturned at Madiun station due to train 52 traveling too fast when entering track 1 Madiun station. There were no fatalities in this incident, and 7 people suffered minor injuries. After the incident, the train track on the southern line was completely closed for several days due to damaged rails and trains blocking the track.[8]
  • On 28 January 2011 at 02.00 local time, Mutiara Selatan 103 train collided with the Kutojaya Selatan (South Kutojaya) 174 train in track 3 Langen station, Langensari, Banjar, West Java. This incident began when 103 train didn't stop at the Langen Station entry signal which should have waited for the green aspect signal to pass directly on track 2 so that 103 train then hit with 174 train which was in the process of entering track 3. This incident resulted in both locomotives and several trains being damaged and causing 3 people are dead while 26 people were injured.[9]
  • On 1 January 2023, Mutiara Selatan train hit a man. After the collided by train, the body of the man was found at a railroad crossing in Palur, Mojolaban, Sukoharjo. PT KAI found the victim had fallen from the Southern Pearl train that he was riding to Mojokerto from Yogyakarta Station with his mother. The victim fell after opening the train door, allegedly due to a mistake between the toilet door and the train door while at the landing, but KAI denied this and found no negligence on the part of the officers at that time.[10]
