- Iceland held a parliamentary election to elect members to the Althing (Alþingi), Iceland's parliament.[1]
July - December
- August
- The 1000th anniversary of the founding of the Icelandic parliament.[2] Iceland celebrated with the unveiling of the Leif Erikson statue in Reykjavík, a gift from the United States, sculpted by Alexander Stirling Calder; Leif Erikson's monument marked Iceland's historic parliamentary milestone.

- The Communist Party of Iceland is founded.
- December
- The Icelandic State Radio named RUV begins broadcasting.
