Platycheirus属はハナアブ科の大属である。 [2]ハナアブはスゲシッターとも呼ばれる。 [3] Platycheirus 属は1828 年に Lepeletier と Serville により、 Syrphus scutatus Meigenのタイプ標本を用いて確立された。この属は主に全北区に分布し、新北区に 70 種が含まれる。特筆すべきことに、これらの新北区種のうち少なくとも 23 種は旧北区にも見られ、その約 110 種が含まれる。Platycheirus の分布は著しく北方であり、新北区の 70 種の半分はユーコン準州、ノースウェスト準州、またはアラスカに分布する。この属はメキシコ、中央アメリカ、南アメリカ、 [4]ヨーロッパ、 [5]アジア、東南アジアにオーストラリア、インドネシア、ニューギニアにはPlatycheirus は見られない。 [6]この属の幼虫は、アブラムシ全般を捕食する種から、特定のアブラムシ種を捕食する種まで、多様な餌を摂取します。ほとんどの幼虫は、落葉の地層内で摂食します。 [7]

プラティケイルス属のハエは、細身で小型から中型のハエで、細かい毛に覆われていることが多い。体色は主に黒またはメタリックグリーンで、腹部には黄色、赤みがかった色、または白っぽい黄色の斑点がある。このハエには剛毛はない。

プラティケイルスの頭部

プラティケイルスの頭部はやや丸みを帯びており、通常は高さよりもわずかに幅が広い。また、胸部よりもわずかに幅が広く、後部に小さな窪みがある。顔の下部である上口蓋は黒色で、中央に突起がある。顔はしばしばわずかに凹んでおり、小さな突起がある。口の上端はわずかに突出している。

プラティケイルスの翼

触角は顔の中央より上、高い位置にあり、触角の第三節は幅よりも長い。触角の一部である鰓節は基部が太く、微細な毛が生えている。眼は滑らかで、オスはホロプティック（全眼）型、つまり中央で合流する。翼には、盤状細胞の中央より手前に横脈（RM）がある。また、明瞭ではあるがそれほど強くない偽脈も存在する。

プラティケイルスの脚はやや細身です。後肢の中足骨は肥厚し、オスでは二次性徴を示します。そのため、オスの前脛骨と足根骨は様々な形で拡張し、特殊な色を呈することがあります。足根骨のみが拡張している場合もあります。

オスは脚、特に前脚で識別できます。メスの中には、識別に役立つ独特の模様を持つものもいますが、多くのメスは識別が難しく、中には見分けがつかない個体もいます。[9]
