サフラン・ウォルデン・タウン・フットボールクラブは、イングランド、エセックス州サフラン・ウォルデンを拠点とするサッカークラブです。現在、エセックス・シニアリーグに所属し、ケイトンズ・レーンで試合を行っています。

歴史

このクラブは1872年にサフラン・ウォルデンとして設立され、エセックス州で最も古いシニアサッカークラブです。[1] 1876-77シーズンにはFAカップに出場しましたが、遠征費の捻出が困難だったため、優勝チームのワンダラーズと対戦することになり棄権しました。2年後、FAカップ初出場を果たしましたが、1回戦で アプトン・パークに0-5で敗れました。

1882年、クラブはエセックス州サッカー協会の創設メンバーとなった。1890年、地元の男子国立学校の校長でもあったクラブ事務局長アーサー・スミ​​スは、ロフト・レーンの土地の使用料としてブレイブルック卿と年間3ポンドで交渉した。それ以前はクラブは町の共有地で試合を行っていたが、観客から入場料を徴収することができなかった。クラブは1894-94シーズンのエセックス・ジュニア・カップ決勝に進出したが、バーキング・エクセルシオールに0-3で敗れた。1896-97シーズンには再び決勝に進出し、再試合で レイトンストーンに6-1で勝利した。

1899年にヘイヴァーヒル・アンド・ディストリクトリーグに参戦し、1907-08年、1922-23年、1923-24年、1928-29年、1929-30年、1933-34年に優勝を果たしました。同時期にはスタンステッド・アンド・ディストリクトリーグ、ケンブリッジシャーリーグ、ハートフォードシャー・アンド・エセックス・ボーダーリーグにも参戦し、スタンステッド・アンド・ディストリクトリーグで7回、ボーダーリーグで1回優勝しました。1926年にはエセックス・ジュニアカップ決勝に進出しましたが、記録的な6,000人の観客が詰めかける中、レインハム・アスレティックに1対2で敗れました。

第二次世界大戦後、クラブは1954年にパルテノンリーグに移籍し、1シーズン後にハートフォードシャー・カウンティリーグに参加した。

1971年、クラブはエセックス・シニアリーグの創設メンバーとなった。1973-74シーズンにリーグ優勝を果たした後、イースタン・カウンティーズリーグに移籍し、1982-83シーズンに優勝を果たした。翌シーズンを6位で終えた後、クラブはイスミアンリーグのディビジョン2ノースに加盟した。1996年、ケイトンズ・レーンの傾斜したピッチがリーグに不適切と判断された規則変更を受け、クラブはエセックス・シニアリーグに降格した。1999-2000シーズンにはリーグ優勝を果たし、翌年は準優勝となったが、グラウンドの改修工事が続いていたため、昇格はかなわなかった。

クラブはイースタン・カウンティーズ・リーグへの移籍を試みましたが、エセックス・シニア・リーグによって阻止されました。クラブは希望を叶えるため、2003-04シーズンはリーグ戦に出場せず、親善試合のみを行い、2004年にイースタン・カウンティーズ・リーグのディビジョン1に復帰しました。しかし、2011年8月、クラブは財政状況により2011-12シーズンを完走できないことを理由にリーグから脱退しました。2012年にイースタン・カウンティーズ・リーグに復帰しました。

On 4 July 2012, members voted to convert the club into a Community Benefit Society.[2] They were promoted to the Premier Division at the end of the 2014–15 season after finishing third in Division One.[3]

At the end of the 2017–18 season Saffron Walden were transferred to the Essex Senior League. In 2019–20 the club were top of the table when the league was abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021–22 they were league runners-up, qualifying for a promotion play-off against Witham Town, which they lost 3–0.

Ground

In 1890, the club moved to The Meadow on Catons Lane. During the 1927–28 season, the first stand at the ground was erected. In 1937, the main stand at the ground was built. In 1954, the first stand at the ground, built from corrugated iron, was replaced. 1966 FIFA World Cup winner Martin Peters opened the new clubhouse in 1973. Six years later, floodlights were added to Catons Lane, with a friendly against Norwich City inaugurating them, in front of a crowd of 1,500.[4]
