プロトトロクテス属はニュージーランドワカサギ属の一種で、オーストラリア原産の種と、ニュージーランド原産だったが現在は絶滅した種が含まれる。

この属の2種は、約1400万年前の中新世に分岐したと考えられています。 ^{[ 1 ]}

• Prototroctes maraena Günther , 1864 (オーストラリア産カワヒバリ)
• † Prototroctes oxyrhynchus Günther , 1870（ニュージーランドカワヒバリ）

さらに、ニュージーランドの前期中新世のセント・バサンズ動物相からは、化石の耳石からのみ知られる2種の先史時代の種（Prototroctes modestus Schwarzhans、2011年とPrototroctes vertex Schwarzhans、2011年）が確認されている。 ^{[ 1 ]}ニュージーランドの更新世からは、分類不明のProtroctesの完全な化石骨格が2つ確認されており、P. oxyrhynchusである可能性が高い。^{[ 1 ] [ 3 ]}
