『トリックス・オブ・ザ・シェード』は、アメリカのヒップホップグループ、ザ・ゴーツのデビューアルバムで、1992年にコロンビア・レコードのサブレーベルであるラフハウス・レコードからリリースされた。 [ 2 ]プロデュースはオート・カトーとジョー・"ザ・ブッチャー"・ニコロが担当した。アートワークはオートの弟で元ゴーツのメンバーであるヴィニー・エンジェルが担当した。 [ 3 ]

アルバムからは「¿Do The Digs Dug?」と「Typical American」の2枚のシングルがリリースされ、[ 4 ]後者はラフハウス・レコードの1999年の最後のリリースであるベスト・ヒット集『Ruffhouse Records Greatest Hits』に収録された。「¿Do the Digs Dug?」は1992年のコロンビア・レコードの映画『ゼブラヘッド』のサウンドトラックに収録された。[ 5 ]

内容

『トリックス・オブ・ザ・シェイド』は、チキン・リトルとハンガーヘッドという2人のキャラクターが、違法な中絶を試みたために投獄された母親を探すために、アンクル・スキャムの連邦政府出資による福祉と見世物小屋を進むというバックストーリーを持つテーマアルバムとして広く宣伝されていますが、政治的な歌詞が特徴です。当時のアメリカ大統領ジョージ・H・W・ブッシュ[ 6 ] 、クリストファー・コロンブス、ダリル・ゲイツ[ 4 ]といった人物を標的にしています。[ 7 ]軍国主義、警察の残虐行為、愛国心、階級主義、人種差別といったテーマについて批判と考察がなされています。歌詞に登場する人物には、ネルソン・マンデラ、ウィリー・ホートン、ユセフ・ホーキンス、ミネソタ・ファッツ、レナード・ペルティエなどがいます。[ 4 ] [ 3 ]

Tricks of the Shade earned some critical acclaim, including 4 of 5 stars in its review by Rolling Stone,[7] and an A from Robert Christgau.[1] The Chicago Tribune opined that "the bulk of the collection features some hard-hitting music, freshened by the presence of five distinct rap voices."[9]

In 2016, NME named it the 12th best album of 1993.[10]
