UNN was created to consolidate all telecommunications infrastructure in the country, effectively separating the network layer from the retail layer to foster a more competitive market among retail service providers (RSPs) such as imagine, Datastream Technology, and Progresif.[2]

History

UNN was established on 4 December 2018 as part of Brunei's strategic plan to modernize its ICT sector in alignment with Wawasan Brunei 2035 (Brunei Vision 2035).[1]

On 1 September 2019, UNN officially took over the network assets and infrastructure previously operated by the country's major providers:

This "asset-light" transformation allowed the retail companies to focus on customer service and product innovation, while UNN focused on upgrading the national backbone, including the rollout of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and 5G technology.[3]
