Pandey, Pande, Panday or Pandya (Hindi) (Nepali) is primarily a HinduBrahmin[1] surname commonly found in India and Nepal. The term is used to refer to an individual with specialized knowledge in any of the domains of Hinduism, particularly the Vedas.[2][3] In Hindi, in addition to being a surname, pāṇḍe is used to denote Pandit or expert and derived from the Sanskrit term Pandita.[4]
People with this surname are found in the Bahun (Hilly Brahmin) (Pandey) and the ChhetriKshatriya communities (Pande) of Nepal. The famous Pande dynasty of Nepal were a Chhetri aristocratic family that dominated the Nepalese administration and military up until the 19th century as Mulkaji and Mukhtiyar.[5]
