ISSの19年以上の歴史の中で、ISS上の騒音レベルを制限し、低減するために多大な努力が払われてきた。設計および飛行前活動において、音響サブグループのメンバーは音響制限値と検証要件を文書化し、設計について協議し、利用可能な最も静かなペイロードを選択し、打ち上げ前に音響検証テストを実施した。[375] :5.7.3 宇宙飛行中、音響サブグループは、多数の車両および科学実験の騒音源によって発生するISSの各モジュールの飛行中の音響レベルを評価し、厳格な音響基準への準拠を確保した。ISSの建設中にモジュールが追加されたり、追加の宇宙船がISSに到着したりすると、ISS上の音響環境は変化した。音響サブグループは、騒音レベルを低減するために音響カバー、吸音材、防音壁、振動絶縁装置を設計および採用することに成功することで、この動的な運用スケジュールに対応してきた。さらに、ポンプ、ファン、換気システムが老朽化し、騒音レベルが上昇すると、この音響サブグループは ISS マネージャに、古くて騒音の大きい機器を静かなファンとポンプの技術に交換するように指導し、周囲の騒音レベルを大幅に削減します。
